Procedural Houdini-Based Cable Generator Prototype

The tool utilizes the Draw Curve node and allows for the cables to affect one another.

Procedural Technical Artist and soon-to-be-developer at Cloud Imperium Games Julian Bragagna has recently showcased an impressive Houdini-powered stackable Cable Tool that allows one to generate industrial-style cables in mere seconds by simply drawing curves.

Currently WIP, the system utilizes Houdini's standard Draw Curve node and "works by raytracing the current spline on all previous ones". This approach retains the chronological order of cable creation, thus allowing for a retroactive interaction where the cables mutually influence one another.

The creator has also emphasized that the demonstrated version of the tool is merely an initial prototype and is far from perfect. The developer intends to refine it over time, planning to expand the cables' adaptability to encompass a wider range of surface types and eventually provide customization options for each individual cable.

"I always wanted to make an automatic cable tool for office or apartment environments. For this one I think I wanna go a bit more industrial.

Right now it's from the initial order. Basically I just take the primitive number and have it all run in a for loop where the raytracing happens one after the other." commented the creator on the idea behind the project and how the order is derived.

Earlier, the artist also shared a comprehensive breakdown explaining how to set up a Berlin Sidewalk generator in Houdini. You can check out the full write-up by clicking this link
