Protect Real Apple from Virtual Bugs in This Fun AR Game for Snapchat Spectacles

An interesting project made by Stijn Spanhove and Pavlo Tkachenko for the Spectacles Community Challenge.

Augmented reality keeps attracting users and developers: playing with the real world with an added bit of virtual magic is always fun, and Stijn Spanhove and Pavlo Tkachenko prove it once again with their single- and multiplayer AR game "where real objects become part of the action."

In this game, made for the Spectacles Community Challenge and using Snapchat's AR Spectacles, you need to defend real fruit from waves of virtual alien bugs by hitting them with your hands.

"The apple is your main target to protect, while the banana becomes an interactive obstacle with an auto-attacking drone. Play solo or co-op, physically squashing enemies with hand tracking."

The developers trained the YOLOv7 model to detect apples and bananas on-device in real time, enabling worms to interact with the objects in front of the players.

The project has ML-powered object detection, hand interactions, single- and multiplayer, waves, combos, score chasing, advanced visuals and shaders, and smooth real-time AR on Snap Spectacles.

There are plenty of fun apps for Spectacles: they can teach you origami, turn your walks into an RPG, and tell you more about the world around.
