Real-Time Compositor Glitch Effect Set Up in Blender

The effect was achieved using an animated Displacement Map made with Rod Zilla's Material Maker.

Mingwei "CMZW" Lim, a 3D Blender Artist who specializes primarily in creating stunning visual effects and animations with Geometry Nodes, impresses us once again with yet another neat setup.

This time, the creator leveraged the recently-released Blender 3.6 LTS to create a cool glitch effect with the real-time compositor. According to the author, the effect was achieved using an animated Displacement Map made with Rod Zilla's Material Maker, a free procedural physically-based rendering materials authoring tool that enables artists to create procedural textures via visual programming.

As usual, the creator has also shared the setup behind the effect, allowing you to easily recreate the result:

Earlier, CMZW also presented Space Marble, a pixelated recreation of Earth as seen from space, a jiggly pudding simulation made with Simulation Nodes, a marvelous school of procedural fish made for Nodevember 2022, and an Impossible Ring, a Blender-made brainbreaker designed to confuse the observer. You can check out all of these projects and more by visiting the artist's ArtStation and Twitter pages.

In case you missed it, Material Maker is a procedural material authoring and 3D model painting tool based on Godot Engine. It allows you to create materials and brushes using graphs, where nodes create or transform textures. These materials can be exported for use in Godot, Unity, Unreal Engine, and other compatible programs.

Most nodes in Material Maker are defined as GLSL shaders. When you connect these nodes, the tool generates combined shaders instead of rendering an image for each node. Additionally, you have the option to create new nodes by combining existing ones or by writing your own GLSL shaders.

Material Maker is an open-source and free project available for Windows, Linux, and MacOS. You can download MM here and learn more about the application by watching the tutorial attached below:
