Senior Lighting Artist Karim Yasser, whose portfolio includes work on projects such as Dune: Awakening, Gears of War: E-Day, and 1348 Ex Voto, unveiled a new demo showcasing his custom Unreal Engine plug-ins.
The newly demonstrated tool, which enables real-time Flow Map painting in UE, is one of the Lighting Suite plug-in solutions in the engine that lets you paint the skybox animation in real time and bake it. The tool solves problems like inconsistent generic flow map shading, repetition on cloud edges, and the common polar top sky distortion, and gives artists full control over masks of movement and direction. Yasser explains that the plug-in also lets artists paint in a specific direction, with the movement becoming faster as they continue brushing.
The tool works with any sky texture, allowing artists to save their setups as presets or return to them later to edit the flow. This provides a fully non-destructive workflow and can eliminate the need for volumetric clouds.
Earlier, Yasser showcased a UE5 plug-in for painting light and shadow inside the engine, similar to 2D drawing:
