"Requiem for the dead. Nightmare for the living."
Resident Evil 9, now titled Resident Evil Requiem, was officially revealed during the Summer Game Fest with a three-minute trailer, offering us a glimpse of the devastated Raccoon City and the setting for the next main installment in the beloved survival horror franchise.
Capcom clearly pulled a clever trick with its announcement. Director Jun Takeuchi said the newest RE would be ready in "just a blink of an eye more" and asked fans to "bear with us a little bit longer." When fans were worried they might not get to see it and started feeling a bit disappointed, Capcom surprised everyone by releasing the trailer shortly after. It was such a cool surprise.
Resident Evil Requiem features Grace Ashcroft, a technical analyst, who is tasked with investigating a murder case that happened at the Remnant hotel, where her mother was killed eight years ago and left her with endless, painful nightmares. "Perhaps it's time for you to face the past," reads the latest X/Twitter post of the franchise's official account:
"Resident Evil Requiem delivers spine-chilling realism like never before, with complex character details like lifelike facial expressions, realistic skin textures, and even high-fidelity sweat droplets that are sure to keep players on the edge of their seats," reads the press release (via Gematsu).
The trailer also reveals the game's release date: February 27, 2026, and many fans have praised that the release date comes along with the reveal trailer, freeing them from eager waiting. Just like one play commented, "Gotta love how Capcom always reveals their RE games with a first trailer and immediately also gives us a definitive and close release date."
Resident Evil Requiem will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam upon release. Great news for those who have a plan to visit Gamescom 2025, taking place from August 20 to 24, as you'll have the opportunity to experience the game's demo there.
