Apple introduced its new M2 chips that will allow Macs to support titles like Resident Evil Village, No Man's Sky, and Grid Legends.
Resident Evil Village
Apple isn't usually associated with computer gaming, however, it started to get more serious about it and made its first attempts to change it. At the Worldwide Developers Conference 2022 which started on Monday, Apple unveiled the new M2 chips that will ship with the 13-inch MacBook Air 2022 and MacBook Pro 2022 in July 2022.
The new chips will feature a number of powerful specs including 24GB of unified memory, 100 GB/s of memory bandwidth, an 8-core CPU, and up to a 12-core GPU. It also has a 16-core Neural Engine that is 40 percent faster than M1 Neural Engine which will considerably speed up such an important element in gaming as AI tasks.
The M2 chips also bring the upgraded version of Apple's Metal software, Metal 3, that will help power games. Its key feature is the MetalFX Upscaling technology, an analog of DLSS and FSR. The support for MetalFX Upscaling will allow Macs to render smaller, less compute-intensive frames that can be upscaled. Besides, Metal 3 features a fast resource loading API that provides the most direct and fastest access to game data in storage.
No Man's Sky
Apple announced that the first games to support MetalFX Upscaling will be Resident Evil Village, No Manʼs Sky, and Grid Legends. The company stated that it is confident that many more well-known titles will be released on Mac in the future, including the titles from leading developers.
Representatives of Capcom, the developer behind Resident Evil Village, said that the game will be able to run at 1080p "effortlessly" on MacBook Air and at 4K on Mac Studio. No Man's Sky will also release on iPad in late 2022 in addition to Mac computers. Both games are set to release on Apple's computers later this year once the M2 chips have been installed.
