Riot Says League Of Legends MMO's Future Is "Incredibly Bright"
It's also the studio's "grail quest," where "many a brave knight are gonna die."

We've known for about five years that Riot Games has been developing an MMO set in the League of Legends universe, although the project has gone through many changes, including a "reset" in early 2024. Given its uncertain development, questions have continued to surround the game's future, especially after the recent announcement that active development on 2XKO, Riot's League of Legends-themed fighting game, has ended.
At PAX West in Seattle last week, Riot Games co-founder Marc Merrill addressed a question about the mysterious League of Legends MMO, essentially confirming that the game is still in development, although it's certainly a challenging one for Riot:
"We know what players' hopes and dreams are, and it's on us as a team – can we succeed in the execution, you know? But what a worthy quest. We jokingly call it 'the grail' internally because we're like, 'F*ck it, you know, many a brave knight are gonna die on the grail quest. But f*ck it, it's the grail, so let's go.'
That's the mindset that we really try to cultivate, and that is hard to do at scale. But I think we're doing a reasonable job, and I think the future's incredibly bright."
That might be a pretty weird metaphor to use, with the whole grail and dying knights thing, considering how much the industry has been dealing with layoffs by 2026.
Unfortunately, Merrill had nothing to share about the game's development, working title, or really any concrete news. The community wasn't exactly thrilled with his answer either, especially given the recent shutdown of 2XKO following its poor performance:
