Rokoko Video: New Free AI Motion Capture Tool

Set your projects in motion from the browser.

Rokoko has released Rokoko Video – a new AI motion capture tool that works in your browser for free. It extracts data from video footage and applies it to 3D characters.

The process is fairly simple: record a video, upload it, and the tool will process it and provide you with the data in the FBX or BVH format, then you can use it in Blender, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, Maya, Unity, or Unreal Engine. The data can be cleaned up in Rokoko Studio, the motion capture data-processing software, also available for free.

Rokoko Video is not the first mocap solution, there are many others, like Plask, Kinetix, and PixCap. Rokoko develops high-end motion capture tools, such as Smartsuit Pro II and Smartgloves, helping customers make as accurate animation as possible.

Now, you might wonder: why would I buy one of these if I can get a free tool from the same creators? According to the studio, its new tool still has some limitations. First of all, the Suit and Gloves provide higher fidelity capture, plus it's hard for Video to generate real-time animation. Additionally, it captures body movement only, meaning you will need Rokoko Face Capture and the Smartgloves if you want high-quality full-body animation.

Despite that, the tool seems to be working quite well and is suited for many fields.
