Sam Lake: "Max Payne & Quantum Break Are Not Part of Remedy Universe"

But he's not against fans making theories.

Following the gamescom trailer of Alan Wake 2, Remedy's creative director Sam Lake talked about what we've seen and answered some burning questions from fans.

"Trapped in a nightmare, Alan Wake has been trying to write his way out. But what happens when something else escapes?

Here there's only victims and monsters. And monsters wear many faces."

The video shows Mr. Door (David Harewood), a character from Control, whom Jesse's brother Dylan Faden met in a dream. Dylan said Door talked about the existence of the multiverse, which led many fans to believe that he is also Martin Hatch from Quantum Break.

While Control and Alan Wake are connected, Lake said that no, Max Payne and Quantum Break aren't linked to the Remedy Universe, but welcomes players to make theories.

"Out of our past games, Max Payne and Quantum Break are not part of the Remedy Connected Universe. They are not part of Remedy's plans," he told Entertainment Weekly. "That being said, in a purely speculative, Easter egg kind of way, I do love the idea of enabling our audience to come up with theories. I don't want to shoot them down on that level. We are making questions possible and giving ideas to people that they can then form their own theories. I think that's very much part of the fun."

Another interesting character is Alan Wake's double, who also briefly appears in the trailer. Some say it could be Mr. Scratch, but Lake neither confirmed nor rejected this idea: "I think it's safe to say that, once again, in one way or the other, Alan Wake's dark double is part of this experience."

With so many cryptic characters around, Lake also mentioned the game's duality:

"There are two hero characters, two worlds, two separate journeys that are still very much connected," he said. "And a lot of mirrors, a lot of twisted reflections, which is also immediately a double in itself – Cauldron Lake being the central point and landmark in the experience, and that being the doorway into the Dark Place has already been established in the franchise."

Lake concluded the interview by saying that Control fans "will actually be surprised about the amount of connection points" between the games. Alan Wake might even inspire those not familiar with Remedy's previous games to give them a chance.

Alan Wake 2 will be released on October 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

They legally can't be part of the RCU so obviously that was his answer. But the Mr Door thing is pretty potent proof.
