See How This Sparkly Glass-Like Apple Was Made in Blender

Moop-A-Doop presented a cute stylized render.

A 3D artist known as Moop-A-Doop showcased a beautiful stylized apple that captures attention with its transparent sides that look like glass. It reminds me of caramelized fruit, but made in Blender.

"As an artist, I have always been drawn to non-photorealistic and stylized rendering. I find the intersection of expressive 2D illustration and the mathematical foundations of 3D modeling particularly compelling, and Blender has become an essential tool for exploring this relationship. Having previously adapted visual elements from my favorite shows into this style, this stylized apple represents another step in my ongoing exploration of artistic expression through 3D rendering," the creator shared with us.

The base mesh is separated into two pieces: a semi-transparent outer layer that gives the apple its glossy surface, and an interior layer that is meant to fake depth.

Both the outer and the inner mesh use hand-painted matcaps as a base color.

You can also add further depth by ray marching details into the inner apple.

"Ray marching is a way to simulate objects in 3D space using math and Signed Distance Functions (SDFs). I used B3Dsdf by William Change for SDF primitives, and converted the world space where the location and view direction are calculated to object space, so each object could have its own star and support rotation."

Then, Moop-A-Doop added fake sparkles by getting the dot product of a Voronoi texture and the view direction to give the illusion of direction-based glitter.

The slice part of the apple uses a combination of fake glitter and a solid color ramp for a matcap to fake surface reflection lines.
