Toothless from Dean DeBlois's live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is a beloved character but also an interesting case for 3D artists. Specialists from Framestore shared a look behind the scenes, demonstrating how the creature was made, inside and out.
The artists tried to capture the charm of the character from the original piece, making it look like a "real living breathing animal," a "combination between a salamander and a black panther or a big cat."

"The key to the whole movie is the relationship between uh Hiccup and Toothless. So it was really important to Dean [DeBlois] that there not be just a tennis ball or a cardboard cutout that we told the actors to look at. We used a company called Stitches and Glue, who make puppets, and they fabricated our models. So when we were on set, we had the right proportions and the right head size. Suddenly, it felt special to have the dragon right there."

The creators knew how much people loved the character and understood their responsibility. Do you think they managed to flesh out Toothless?
