Shovel Knight Dev's Excellent Pixel Art Zelda-Like Finally Has a Release Date
After years of anticipation and multiple delays, Mina the Hollower launches this month with its mix of retro Zelda-inspired exploration, gothic horror, and modern action design.
After years of development, delays, and mounting expectations, Mina the Hollower finally has an official release date.
Developer Yacht Club Games, best known for Shovel Knight, confirmed that its long-awaited top-down action-adventure game will launch on May 29 for PC, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
You might be wondering why I called the game excellent if it's not out yet, and that's because I played the demo what feels like a lifetime ago and have been impatiently waiting for it to release ever since. As a huge retro gamer and massive Zelda fan, it feels like a game made just for me.
Originally announced in 2022 following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Mina the Hollower quickly drew attention for its distinct visual style and clear inspiration from classic handheld-era adventure games. The project combines Game Boy Color-inspired pixel art with fast-paced combat, gothic horror aesthetics, and exploration-driven design influenced by titles like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and Castlevania.
The game places players in the role of Mina, a whip-wielding inventor capable of “hollowing” underground to evade enemies and traverse environments. Alongside melee combat, players can equip sidearms and trinkets while exploring interconnected areas filled with secrets, bosses, and puzzle-driven progression.
Visually, Mina the Hollower stands apart from many modern retro-inspired projects through its strict commitment to Game Boy Color-era limitations. Yacht Club Games has previously explained that the game intentionally adheres to many original hardware restrictions, including limited color palettes and sprite constraints, while modernizing presentation through widescreen support and smoother animation.
Community anticipation remains extremely high following years of demos, showcases, and convention appearances. On Reddit and social media, players have reacted positively not just to the release date itself, but also to the game’s unexpectedly low $19.99 price point, with many describing it as unusually aggressive for the scale and polish being shown.
From a development perspective, Mina the Hollower represents an interesting counterpoint to current industry trends. While many indie projects lean heavily into procedural systems or modernized retro aesthetics, Yacht Club’s approach appears much more focused on handcrafted level design, mechanical precision, and deliberate technical limitations as part of the game’s identity.
The result is a project that feels less like a nostalgic throwback and more like an attempt to explore an alternate timeline for top-down action games—one where the design language of handheld-era classics continued evolving without abandoning their core structure.
