Sierra Founders Are Remaking Colossal Cave Adventure for PC and VR

Sierra On-Line founders Ken and Roberta Williams announced they are working on a revival of Colossal Cave Adventure promising a "fully immersive" three-dimensional game that will also be available in VR.

Pioneers of the graphical adventure video game genre and Sierra On-Line founders, Ken and Roberta Williams, presented their next project which was previously referred to as The Secret. The developers announced they are reimagining their text adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure which was first released back in 1976.

The new title called Colossal Cave 3D Adventure is a first-person adventure game that is designed in Unity. The game will be available for PC and VR via the Quest 2 standalone headset. According to Ken Williams, Colossal Cave 3D Adventure will take place "in a fully immersive 3D and VR environment for a realistic cave exploration experience that is intended for the whole family".

Following the adventures, the players will have to come across various characters like a troll, a bear, a snake, and a pirate. The player's mission will seemingly be to "find all the treasure", while the game promises to be challenging featuring a "wide variety of puzzles to overcome".

Ken Williams shared that he and Roberta started to work on Colossal Cave 3D while being bored by the COVID-19 lockdown. "I was looking for something interesting to code when Roberta suggested Colossal Cave. Roberta started to work adapting it to 3D, and I assembled a team. As we dug deeper and deeper into the game we discovered layers of complexity that explain why the game became such an industry phenomena," he said.

Colossal Cave 3D Adventure is slated to release in summer or fall 2022 on Windows and Mac. Developers noted that they are considering other platforms as well.
