Smooth Obstacle Avoidance System Set Up in Unreal Engine
The mechanics by Fabiano Dias will remind you of good old Assassin's Creed.
Fabiano Dias, the developer behind the Loco Dev account, shared a nice obstacle avoidance system set up in Unreal Engine 5. It makes the character naturally slip between objects and sidestep them – it's a lot like the crowd motion control in Assassin's Creed.
If you're curious how the creator achieved this effect, here's what he says about it:
"Sphere traces fire every frame on both sides based on the character's location. When one hits a wall, it drives an additive blendspace that changes the character's orientation to react to it. Capsule radius also adjusts for tight spaces. All Blueprints."
And if you don't want to set up your own system but still wish to use it, Dias has the files on Patreon, including:
- Full obstacle avoidance system breakdown.
- Clear explanation of all key variables.
- Right and left wall detection logic.
- Trace direction smoothing.
- Capsule radius adjustment.
- Reset behavior and data flow.
- Beginner-friendly technical documentation.
