Sony Will Help Create Spatial Content with Its New XR Headset

Like Vision Pro but for developers.

At CES 2024, Sony announced the development of an "immersive spatial content creation system," which contains an XR headset and a pair of controllers.

While it might remind you of Apple's Vision Pro AR goggles, Sony's device is mostly aimed at developers as it should support them "in sophisticated 3D content creation." It boasts high-quality 4K OLED Microdisplays with a video see-through function, spatial recognition with six cameras and sensors, and Sony's proprietary rendering technology that enables realistic visuals of 3D objects and facial expressions.

The system has two controllers: the bigger one enables precise pointing and the ring one allows you to intuitively manipulate objects in virtual space. This setup should make 3D creation in XR a much easier and more pleasant task. It also supports remote, real-time review between locations, "making this an intuitive and immersive tool for the entire process of spatial content creation."

Powered by the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Platform, the gadget was created by Sony in collaboration with Siemens "to introduce a new solution for immersive design and collaborative product engineering using software from the Siemens Xcelerator open digital business platform."

The device looks comfortable enough to wear, although I haven't tried it myself. Switching between reality and virtuality is simple thanks to the flip-up mechanism of the display, which allows you to move the screen away from your eyes without taking it off entirely.

The system will be available later in 2024. At launch, Sony will partner with Siemens only, but the company wishes to collaborate with various 3D production software developers as well.
