Sony Won't Release "New Major Existing Franchise Titles" Before April 2025

Meanwhile, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 sells 10 million copies and PlayStation 5 – almost 55 million.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has published its financial report for the three months ended on December 31, 2023, revealing its operating income of $608 million. The company sold 8.2 million PlayStation 5 units in that period, a 1.1 million increase year-over-year, which puts the console's lifetime sales at 54.8 million. Interestingly, Sony reported 50 million in December, so it seems 4 million consoles were purchased in three weeks at the end of 2023.

Apart from PS5, Sony sold 10 million copies of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, released in October. However, we might not see such big numbers from the company for a while. Sony's president Hiroki Totoki announced that the group won't release "any new major existing franchise titles next fiscal year" (until March 31, 2025.)

So we won't see God of War, another Spider-Man game, or Death Stranding 2 until the second half of next year.

“Regarding first-party software, we aim to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games,” Totoki said (via Gematsu).

"Although the burden of acquisition related costs will ease next fiscal year, we expect profit from first-party software to decrease slightly from this fiscal year due to the impact of the decrease in sales. Due to this, operating income for the next fiscal year is currently expected to increase slightly from this fiscal year. However, while this our baseline, we are reviewing measures for further improvement in profitability in advance of the annual forecast results announcement this May."

He mentioned that PlayStation 5 is "entering the latter half of the console cycle", so Sony will try to "optimize sales with a greater emphasis on balance with profits."
