Space Marine 2 CEO Speaks against Games "Imposing Morals"

"We just want to do some glory kills and get the heart rate up a little."

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has launched to a positive reception, with players generally praising the game and its brutal approach. One such person is content creator Asmongold, who released a reaction to Legendary Drops' video called "Space Marine 2 is a reminder of what we lost," where he agreed that the game "oozes with masculinity" and evokes nostalgia with its themes of courage, honor, and brotherhood, which we've don't see much now, in his words.

It seems like this was the developer Saber Interactive's intention, as a YouTube user claiming to be the CEO of the company Matthew Karch commented on Asmongold's video, saying he wanted to make a "throwback game" and criticizing modern titles that "impose morals" on players.

"When we signed the deal to make Space Marine 2, all I wanted was a throwback game. We had the chance to work on something which by its nature was ‘old school’. I can’t even comprehend many of the current games that we play these days. They are too complex and too much of an investment. We worked on Halo back in the day, and that game could be distilled down to the simplest of shooting loops, but it was entirely addicting. That is what we wanted to recapture," (allegedly) Karch said.

He hopes that Space Marine 2 and Black Myth: Wukong will bring back the time "when games were simply about fun and immersion."

"I saw games there that made me want to cry with their overblown attempts at messaging or imposing morals on gamers. We just want to do some glory kills and get the heart rate up a little. For me that is what games should be about."

The game's creative director Oliver Hollis-Leick has also thanked Asmongold in the comments: "Hearing everything you have to say about the story and characters resonates so strongly with our actual approach. It's great to hear you calling out the exact things that we intentionally focused on. It was four and a half years of intense work and passion and watching videos like this makes it all worth it."

Whether or not you agree with Karch, Space Marine 2 sold 2 million copies in just a day, becoming "the fastest selling game" that Saber's Head of Publishing and CCO had ever worked on.
