Spooky Godzilla Animation Inspired by VHS Found Footage Videos

The sequence was set up using Blender Eevee and After Effects.

Ever since its debut in 1954, Godzilla has been the main subject of numerous movies, ranging from megalophobia-inducing Japanese kaiju horrors to high-octane action flicks with the iconic reptile battling both humans and other giants. One particular genre that Godzilla isn't commonly associated with, however, is the 90s-style found footage, so it was up to Film Director and Writer Danny Donahue to imagine what such a movie would look like.

Recently, the artist showcased a short Analog Horror-inspired first-person animation, portraying an unfortunate cameraman falling victim to the monster's attack. According to Danny, the sequence was set up in Blender using free assets, including this Godzilla model sourced from CGTrader, and rendered in Eevee at around 20 seconds per frame. Additionally, the author utilized Adobe After Effects to add the VHS filter and film grain in post-production.

"I worked on this clip a few hours per day every couple of days for about two weeks," commented Danny. "I didn't model the assets myself in this case so that cut down on time by a lot because I could just focus on animation and lighting and building the most realistic scene I could for the render engine."

It's worth noting that this incredible animation is not the first of Danny's attempts to imagine Godzilla in a found footage setting. Attached below are some of the artist's earlier works revolving around the same idea, you can check out more by visiting Danny Donahue's official YouTube channel:
