Starfield's Lead Designer and Writer Draws Inspiration from Cyberpunk 2077 and Spider-Man

Emil Pagliarulo talked about his inspiration and work on Starfield.

Emil Pagliarulo – Lead Designer and Writer on Starfield – discussed his work on the game and shared his inspirations.

Pagliarulo has been working at Bethesda Game Studios for 19 years and has worked on many major games of the studio: from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind to Fallout 76.

Pagliarulo shares that nowadays, his work mostly consists of meeting with the designers and playtesting the game to gauge the progress. The developers are honest with themselves about what works and what doesn't and try to make sure the players "get the experience they expect and deserve."

While talking about what inspired him, Pagliarulo said that Thief is still one of his favorite games. He also mentioned Cyberpunk 2077 and the newest Spider-Man games.

"I really love playing games that just make me shake my head, like, 'Wow. I know how they did that, and it is a crazy accomplishment.' The newest Spider-Man games have been like that for me. Or Cyberpunk. Man, to make a giant, open-ended environment like Night City? That is no easy feat. Seriously impressive."

The designer shared that making games is not always fun, it's hard work, but it pays off when you see your game released and feel your involvement. He promises Starfield will be amazing once it is finished. The game is planned to be released on November 11, 2022, for PC and Xbox.
