His YouTube channel also takes some time from him.

Super Smash Bros. director launched his YouTube channel called Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games in 2022 and has shared a lot of invaluable game development tips since then. Short videos explain the details of production well, and now the channel has over 570,000 subscribers. However, fans of his work are wondering if they'll ever see a new title from him, and they might.

In one of his recent videos, Sakurai mentioned that he's still working on games, although the channel does take some of his time.

"As for me, I’m still creating games for the time being, but I’m also making this YouTube channel," Saukrai said (via IGN). "I’d never done anything like this before starting, so in a way, you could say I haven’t exactly stayed put either."

In the Creators Change, Too video, he also talks about his experience in the industry when he started as a young developer.

While Sakurai has changed, it's not clear if the game he's making is another installment in his famous series or a new IP. Previously, he said he "can't imagine a Smash Bros. title without [him]" and would like to "keep working with Nintendo."

This doesn't mean Sakurai's next title is a continuation of the popular franchise, but I could see it happening. His last game was Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018, so it's high time we see something new from the director.

Speaking about game developers and how they change, Sakurai says that everyone has their own path in life, even if fans want them to do something specific, and we shouldn't begrudge them if they move on.

"Aside from those who reach retirement age, there are quite a few people who disappear from the game industry part way through their careers," he said. "Of course, for some of them it's simply unclear where they ended up. This isn't limited to the game industry, but if a creator you know does suddenly vanish without a trace please don't write them off as "washed up" or "finished"!"
