Take a Look at This Developer's WIP Engine for Retro Games

"Rebuilding the Soul of CRTs."

With Unreal Engine and Unity dominating the gamedev field, it might seem that all hope for a new engine is disappearing. However, technical artist Alexander Rybak is not giving up on old-school games and is working on RetroEngine, which will hopefully bring back CRT-style titles.

In less than 3 months, he built a foundation for the engine and is now developing lighting and shadows.

"RetroEngine is my passion project to recreate the look, feel, and physics of real CRT displays (beam scanning, phosphor glow, and analog life) entirely from scratch in DirectX 12. This isn’t a post-process filter; it’s a study of how light itself behaved on glass."

Inspired by games on the SEGA Genesis and Super Nintendo, the engine will simulate how a CRT works, "from beam movement to phosphor glow to glass diffusion," not just apply a filter on top. If you want to see Rybak's progress, check out his X/Twitter and website.
