Take a Look at This RPG with Top-Down Exploration and Side-Scroll Combat

The developer of TORNBLADE, an upcoming 2.5D RPG, shared a glimpse of the gameplay and asked the audience's opinion about one of the design decisions, namely mixing top-down exploration and side-scrolling combat.

As seen in the video above, the game combines combat shifting into a side-scrolling perspective with top-down exploration and narrative. The developer shared that from their point of view, such an approach makes sense for combat readability and control.

TORNBLADE is a dark action RPG, inspired by the old-school games from the 80s and 90s, with a Slavic and Celtic atmosphere. You take on the role of a lone knight, trying to save yourself from the corruption of the dark forces. In the game, you will explore the extensive realm of Hraefnfeld, uncovering new pieces of the map, speaking to the remaining dwellers, and uncovering secrets of the land. Apart from exploring and completing the errands, the game features challenging combat with brutal enemies, shown in the side-scrolling view.

As the developer explained, the game is built with Unreal Engine 5, with models and animations done with Blender, texturing handled with Blender, Substance 3D Painter, and Photoshop, and the music composed in Cubase.
