Take-Two CEO Says "Generative AI Has Zero Part" in GTA 6
But he is "enthusiastic" about it and sees AI tools "driving costs and time efficiencies."

It's no secret that one of the fastest ways to fall from grace (aside from appearing in certain files) in the gamedev industry is to use generative AI. Whatever you feel about it, backlash is always there, loud, when yet another company is caught using machines instead of human labor.
With GTA 6 coming, fans might get worried about lazy assets in the game, but Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar's parent company, is confident: there's no generative AI in Rockstar's work on GTA 6, even though he himself is quite fond of it.
"On the topic of AI, I've been enthusiastic since the very beginning," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "This company's products have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence. We've actually always been a leader in the space, and right now we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios. And we're already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies."
"That said, do I think tools by themselves create great entertainment properties? No, there's no evidence that that's the case and it won't be the case in the future. Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That's what differentiates them. They're built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They're not procedurally generated, they shouldn't be. That's what makes great entertainment."
Interestingly, in 2023, he said that using AI "almost certainly will not be faster and cheaper" and it won't make it easier "to create hits."
Well, at least we can rest easier knowing that GTA 6 delays are likely due to human factors.
