Texturing Weapons: Tips on Creating Surfaces, Weathering, & Stylized Assets

Check out the digest with helpful advice from talented 3D artists.

We've been sharing plenty of tips for aspiring and seasoned artists through our articles and interviews. Today, we present a collection of advice that will be helpful for creators interested in texturing weapons.

Most of these articles are interviews, where talented artists break down their projects and walk us through each workflow stage, explaining techniques and behind-the-scenes details.

General Tips

Creating Metal & Wooden Surfaces

Bohdan Ishchuk presented a detailed breakdown of his texturing workflow, which consists of three stages. He also described adding wear and tear, pointing out that weathering can come from different sources, such as oil, dust, and dirt.

CD Projekt Red's Lead Weapon Artist Michal Kalisz showed the technique used to detail porous metal with water droplet textures:

Bohdan Levochko talked to us about visualizing a gun inspired by Call of Duty: Warzone and emphasized the importance of color variation:

"You need to start with a wide range of base colors and shades. For example, if we are working with black, I use various tones of gray, dark, and light, as well as purple, green, and red hues, which, in my opinion, work best with black."

David Woodman detailed the creation of wear and tear on metal surfaces by following the workflow of manual masking through stencils:

As for the separate parts of the weapon, check out the interview with Roman Shvaiko, who explained his working process behind creating a 3D model of a grip.

Stylized Weapon

Sargis Ter-Grigoryan shared a process of creating the nostalgia-evoking toy prop and visualization of engravings on plastic.

If you are interested in creating sci-fi environments and assets, check out the interview with Maxim Buyanov, in which the creator discussed modeling a futuristic weapon and adding wear and tear, such as scratches and smearing

Bonus

A little bit of entertainment: weapons appear in fantasy and magical-inspired stories. For example, Wiktoria Labudzinska walked us through her Gothic Sword project, showing how she textured the stylized prop using Substance 3D Painter.

Also, Nicolas Bargès talked to us about the Dungeon Sword project, discussing creating a Wayfinder-inspired magical sword and sharing tips on translating a 2D concept to 3D and detailing hand-painting.

Apart from this, take a moment to admire a telescope-like sword by Kay Lousberg, a wave-like sword by Ryan Will, and a lightning sword by Mingwei Lim:

We hope you've found this digest both helpful and inspiring. Wishing you lots of luck with your amazing 3D creations!
