The Next Hitman Game Is "On Hiatus" As Devs Focus on James Bond Game & Fantasy RPG

HITMAN World of Assassination will continue to get expansions but the next mainline installment is still far away.

For more than 20 years, the Hitman franchise has been entertaining gamers, with some titles having fared better than others. It is widely considered that the series reached its peak with the 2016 reboot, which spawned a wonderful trilogy, culminating in HITMAN World of Assassination announced earlier this year.

However, unfortunately, fans of the franchise will have to wait a considerable amount of time for new Agent 47 adventures as developer IO Interactive announced that there are no current plans for a new Hitman game.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the studio's chief creative officer and co-owner Christian Elverdam has reminded fans that IO is now busy with two new projects – a brand new James Bond game and a recently-revealed online fantasy RPG.

With the studio prioritizing its attention on the two new IPs, the main Hitman series has taken a backseat and is currently on a "hiatus", as Elverdam puts it.

"Right now a major, major new Hitman game: that's a little bit on hiatus as we're building another agent fantasy that's also taking up a lot of our time," Elverdam said, referencing the upcoming James Bond title. "But obviously we'll come back to beloved Agent 47. He's still very much in the heart of this company."

Still, fans can rejoice as the developers have announced that World of Assassination, which was recently upgraded with the exciting new roguelike Freelancer game mode, will continue to get expanded.

"I hope we can have our cake and eat it too, in the sense that we have such a wonderful platform where we can keep experimenting with what the formula can do and what people expect of it," Elverdam said. "And then at some point, obviously, as any creative, it would be nice to then go in and say, 'Okay, well, with everything we've learned, what would that be if we had to re-articulate a sandbox – what would that look like?'"
