The Upcoming ZBrush 2023 Previewed

The team shared a look at the features they plan to add with the yet-to-come ZBrush update.

On the third day of the recently-concluded 2022 ZBrush Summit, a four-day streaming event that featured Digital Artists and industry leaders discussing their sculpting techniques and sharing insightful tips and tricks, the ZBrush team shared a look at ZBrush 2023, a soon-to-be-released ZBrush update currently in its third beta.

During the stream, the team showcased two separate builds of ZBrush 2023, with the first one featuring updates to ZRemesher and a new masking system and the second one coming with the integration of Redshift renderer, a feature that, in light of Maxon's acquisition of ZBrush back in January this year, was expected by many artists worldwide. Please note that at the moment, the company hasn't yet officially confirmed whether or not these new features will be included in the next update, the release date of which also remains a mystery.

The first thing the team demonstrated is the new and improved version of ZRemesher, the application's retopology toolset. According to the team, the overhauled ZRemesher comes with a new Retry button, which enables one to retry the remeshing operation, includes a new caching system designed to speed up the remeshing process, and brings a new option called KeepPolypaint that makes it possible to begin painting your sculpts earlier in the process.

Another new feature shown by the team is the brand-new smart masking system that adds the Mask Region option to the software, which can be used to automatically fill the regions of an object’s surface between existing masks.

And finally, the developers demonstrated the second ZBrush build that comes with the integrated Redshift, Maxon's GPU-accelerated 3D rendering software, a new addition that enables one to drastically improve the quality of renders made directly in ZBrush. According to the team, the integration comes with support for Polypaint data and the software's existing BPR filters, adds tons of options and sliders that allow you to tweak and customize the final renders, and more.
