By Sk Sabbir.
3D artist Sk Sabbir presented a Blender-made robotic arm rig that is not as simple as it looks. When he took on this project commission, he thought it could be easily solved with IK, but it was not the case.
"The 3 ball bearing joint at the top of the right side wasn't being on the correct position of the robotic arm. Somehow the joint kept breaking and breaking meaning the connecting rods were displacing from the joint," he said.
It took him sleepless nights to figure out, but then an Arduino project caught his eye: it was the same arm but smaller. "I watched the video maybe 5-10 times and tried to analyze the movement for each arm. I saw that the grabber doesn't move to a single axis when a single motor at rear rotates. The motor creates a motion in both Y and Z axis. Then I realized, this is it. I have seen the logic and this rig can't be made with just IK. This needs to be made with FK and constraints."
And so the arduous project was completed thanks to a YouTube video. Now we can enjoy the result and appreciate Sk Sabbir's hard work.
