This Language-Based Puzzle Game Is Hand-Painted in Watercolor
Exploring The Land Forgotten's world feels like entering a fairy-tale book.
As AI tools can now imitate many traditional and digital art techniques, hand-crafted work is especially noteworthy. Take a look at The Land Forgotten, a WIP adventure puzzle game developed by Daria, which is entirely hand-drawn in watercolor.
Each scene, from background to individual objects and characters, is painted with real-life materials. Following a traditional workflow reminiscent of creating book illustrations, the game creators begin with background design, overall composition, and individual project placement, then proceed to several variants of watercolor sketches to decide on the palette. Characters are animated frame by frame, after which each frame is painted.
Have a look at how one of the scenes is created:
The Land Forgotten is a whimsical point-and-click adventure following the story of Qoli, who has been chosen as a wizard's apprentice, but she cannot use magic. With her outspoken companion Rat, she must find a lost civilization to translate a mysterious manuscript.
The game is a gift to those loving puzzles with deciphering, as its riddles are based on real-life languages and linguistic principles. Languages and number systems from the real world appear disguised as keys, spells, and potion ingredients. For example, keys of intricate shapes are based on a Mongolian writing system.
There's no need to rush; The Land Forgotten gives you time to explore, read, and think while enjoying a 3D watercolor world – an experience reminiscent of exploring a real-life illustrated book.
