This Physics-Based Office Destruction Simulator Is Now on Steam

Fenix Studios' Rick Pearce has shared some exclusive details about Office Fight, a fun Unreal Engine 5-based game with ragdolls and heaps of breakable stuff.

Today, let's have a closer look at Office Fight, a fun Unreal Engine 5-powered physics-based office destruction simulator recently uploaded to Steam by its developer and publisher, an Australian indie game development team, Fenix Studios.

In this game, you play as a ghost of a Mega-corp employee who died shortly after having been fired by the company. As a ghost, you'll have the ability to possess office equipment, cause chaos, and ignite epic ragdoll brawls among coworkers, all in pursuit of vengeance against the company that laid you off and worked you to death.

With the game's semi-official motto being "Work sucks, break stuff", Office Fight provides an ideal way to vent your real-life frustrations, especially in light of the ongoing wave of layoffs that has been affecting the gaming industry this year.

Rick Pearce, a CEO/CCO at Fenix Studios, has recently shared some exclusive details about Office Fight with 80 Level, explaining the idea and development process behind the game, discussing the usage of Unreal Engine 5, revealing the game's release date, and more. Here's what Pearce told us:

Intro

At Fenix Studios, we have a huge drive for all things games. In our early days we were doing VR and Virtual Production under Spectre Studios but making our very own game one day was something we've always wanted to do.

Earlier this year, we finally found a window of opportunity after our studio was made redundant we decided to roll the dice rebrand ourselves, and make a game about being made redundant and seeking revenge. Directly within Fenix, there are 9 of us, but we often get talent help from our partner organization VIZION Studios.

Office Fight

Office Fight began as this super bizarre idea that I had that slowly formed into something that we couldn't stop laughing about. The more we worked on it, the more we wanted to see how far we could push it. It began as prototype character bodies just slapping each other and eventually became this over-the-top brawling simulator with all the awkward physics still attached.

We have quite a few gameplay mechanics that involve power-up 'Runes' that change the way you play and various move sets/takedowns to get for your employees to use in their fights. Some of these include multi-throws, explosive throws, and even black holes!

The biggest selling point though, is probably the physics! It was really tricky to get right, but it's quite satisfying throwing a pot plant at someone and watching them tumble face flat into a couch or a table.

Some of the inspiration for our technical animator was actually old Hong Kong action movies with how they flip and crash into various things around the room. The moves always make different results as you never know what office debris will come flying out and hit someone else!

Unreal Engine 5

All of this was done in Unreal Engine 5. The destruction was all done using Unreal Engine's Chaos Destruction system and their Fracture tools which made managing the destructible assets quite easy. Sometimes the results can be finicky though, as the physics may not behave the way we want or this desk didn't snap the way we wanted. Even now it can still do some funky things but it's added a certain charm to the game that we love.

We have a Beta on Steam that you can wishlist now and will be available for free from October 20, with the first full release available starting December 15.
