This Robotic 3D Cat Features Organic & Hard-Surface Textures

Marco Plouffe has showcased the final version of the Megagato project.

Marco Plouffe, a renowned Art Director, Character Artist, and Co-Founder of Keos Masons, who earlier reimagined Kaeru (Frog) from Chrono Trigger as a character from FromSoftware's Elden Ring, has presented the final version of Megagato (Meganimals), a highly-detailed 3D character design that combines both organic and hard-surface textures.

Depicting a stylized Sphynx cat wearing a high-tech robotic suit, the project took more than nine months to complete, with Marco being responsible for every single step of the pipeline. According to the project's ArtStation page, the author utilized ZBrush, RizomUV, Substance 3D Painter, and Arnold for sculpting, unwrapping, texturing, and rendering the character.

And here are some untextured WIP shots shared by the author:

Moreover, the entire production process behind Megagato was streamed on Twitch, with VODs being available via Keos Masons' official YouTube channel. You can watch the entire series, featuring over 30 2-hour-long video breakdowns, by clicking this link.

If you would like to learn more about Marco and his approach to character art, we also recommend checking out our interview with the artist, where he explained how the aforementioned Elden Frog project was made, discussed the sculpting pipeline in ZBrush, and talked about texturing and rendering 3D characters.
