This WIP Mod Adds Path Tracing to Fallout: New Vegas

The mod introduces a physically based sky with volumetric clouds, turns every engine light into a real light, and upgrades the look of the Pip-Boy screen.

Modder Kim2091 New Vegas RTX has released a mod for Fallout: New Vegas, a beloved game from Obsidian and Bethesda that celebrates its 16th birthday.

The project adds full path tracing built on NVIDIA RTX Remix and includes a new renderer with custom volumetric clouds, PBR, including parallax, and more, while retaining mod compatibility. Every engine light is turned into a real light, and it includes lights behind you and lights that move, such as muzzle flashes, torches carried by NPCs, and the Pip-Boy light in first and third person. The improved lighting also adds soft shadows and reflections that show what's actually there, even behind you.

New Vegas RTX revamps the weather system and environment visuals with a physically based sky, including atmosphere, volumetric clouds, stars, and the moon, that follows the game's clock. It also follows the game's weather and blends with the game's own weather changes. Weather added by other mods is recognized by type, so they work too.

The Pip-Boy also gets a visual upgrade. The game world now stays live behind it and behind the barter, container, and repair menus, instead of turning into a frozen sepia picture. Its screen remains readable in bright sunlight, with a simulated CRT glass effect.

Kim2091 notes that New Vegas RTX is still a work in progress, and performance and features will keep improving over time as bugs are fixed. The modder shares that they haven't tested the DLCs yet, and the weather presets aren't all set up for the DLC worldspaces yet either.
