After months of speculation and years of rumors, Bethesda Game Studios has officially confirmed that remasters of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development.
The announcement comes as part of a lengthy message shared by the studio outlining its long-term roadmap, which also provides new status updates on The Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5, Starfield, and a separate Fallout project currently in development at Obsidian Entertainment.
For Fallout fans, the biggest surprise is the confirmation that two of the franchise's most beloved entries are receiving the remaster treatment.
"We also know many players want to revisit previous Fallout experiences," Bethesda wrote. "While we're not announcing any dates today, we have been working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas."
Although the studio stopped short of revealing platforms, release windows, or the scope of the remasters, this marks the first official acknowledgment of projects that have circulated in reports and leaks for years. Both games remain among the highest-rated RPGs of their generation, with Fallout: New Vegas in particular continuing to enjoy an active modding community more than 15 years after launch.
Bethesda also reaffirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI remains the studio's primary focus.
"The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with the majority of our team currently working on the next chapter of the franchise," the company said, adding that development is progressing as planned.
Meanwhile, Fallout 5 has officially entered pre-production. Bethesda described the sequel as a long-term destination for the studio following The Elder Scrolls VI, signaling that fans shouldn't expect the next numbered Fallout anytime soon.
The roadmap also confirmed that Obsidian Entertainment is working on another Fallout project, though Bethesda did not elaborate beyond promising more information in the future. The announcement immediately reignited speculation about what role the Fallout: New Vegas developer may play in the franchise's future.
Outside of Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda reiterated its commitment to Starfield, promising additional stories, gameplay improvements, and continued long-term support.
Bethesda also confirmed they're relying on their internal Creation Engine going forward. Today, they announced Creation Engine 3, the next iteration of the foundation of the studio's biggest RPG releases. This will allow them to "support multiple projects simultaneously with new tools, rendering, and systems" for the future.
The timing of the announcement is particularly notable, arriving shortly after Microsoft's sweeping Xbox restructuring and layoffs, which affected Bethesda alongside several other first-party studios. In its statement, Bethesda emphasized its continued investment in its largest franchises, saying it aims to support these worlds "for decades to come."
For now, there are still plenty of unanswered questions. Bethesda has not revealed whether the Fallout remasters will be straightforward visual upgrades, larger-scale remakes, or something in between. Likewise, The Elder Scrolls VI remains without a release window despite now being firmly established as the studio's primary project.
