Try out a Prototype Inspired by Slay the Spire & Inscryption

Shroom and Gloom brings innovative gameplay experiences to the roguelike deck-builder genre.

If you enjoy deck-building games and appreciate the art style of Slay the Spire, we have a new prototype for you to try.

As introduced by the developer Team Lazerbeam, an indie studio based in South Africa, Shroom and Gloom started as a jam game back in 2021. It quickly attracted a lot of interest, so the developers decided to take the concept further and turned it into a first-person dungeon-crawling deck builder with a beautiful hand-drawn art style.

The first-person view makes the gameplay experience so immersive. Looking at what’s in front of you that blocks the way and shooting the fungal enemies using a flying card of weapons or skills like stab, flash, or stab are satisfying.

The game is unique in the deck-builder genre as it allows players to build a second deck with which they can unlock locks on the chests to receive more cards or open doors to access new areas.

Exceptionally, you have the ability to improve and modify your cards constantly. As you play more, the basic cards can evolve into powerful attacks, while rare cards can transform into “game-changing super-weapons.”

You’ve got more ways to torture your enemies other than killing them, as the game encourages players to try out different approaches for the foes, and you can even cook them into some “game-changing soups.”

The development team would like to gather players’ feedback and assess the potential for turning this into a full-fledged game. The prototype is available for download on Itch, and it is compatible with both Windows and Mac. We encourage you to share your thoughts with the developer on social media.
