Tutorial: Using MaterialX in Substance Designer

Learn how to work with the new plugin for Substance Designer.

MaterialX is an open standard from Lucasfilm and ILM that aims at defining shaders and materials. The point of MaterialX is that it gives you an opportunity to share this data between apps. You can also author these shaders with a graph. With the new plugin, you can create OpenGL real-time shaders.

In the tutorial, you’ll find out how to install Python and C++ libraries so you can work with the plugin and how to create your first graph in it, and how to work with textures. This walkthrough will work for you even if you’re a beginner since the whole process is demonstrated and narrated step-by-step.

Get the plugin on Substance Share and binaries on GitHub.
