Ubisoft Union Representatives Call for CEO's Resignation

Two union representatives spoke about matters within the company.

Two union representatives are calling for Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot's resignation. In a recent talk with Game Developer, Marc Rutschlé and Chakib Mataoui expressed their views on the company's processes.

The representatives suggested that the current CEO should step down. While they don't think the company's struggles are only his fault, the representatives suppose it's his responsibility.

"It's his company, at the end of the day," Rutschlé says. "But everyone around him are just yes men. That was also the issue during the sexual [harassment] scandal in 2020."

Mataoui echoed those concerns, pointing to Guillemot's decision to appoint his son, Charlie Guillemot, as co-CEO of a newly formed subsidiary having several major franchises. He argued that this approach to leadership appointments is undermining Ubisoft's ability to develop successful games.

"If you just put your white male friends in [those jobs], then you don't promote any diversity or get any new opinions or ideas," Mataoui says. "We are in a creative job. We need new ideas to come in to [help us] make great new games. But we don't have that. We don't have this mindset for creativity."

Mataoui said it felt as though the current executives "don't understand their social responsibility to employees," adding that workers should be able to elect those responsible for overseeing the company.

The respondents also expressed reservations about Ubisoft's recently revealed return-to-office policy, pointing out that many of the company's employees had moved away and probably can't afford to live in the Paris area.

Ubisoft recently announced major restructuring, resulting in changes to its release schedule and the establishment of new divisions.
