In addition to other announcements made by Epic Games during its State of Unreal presentation at Game Developers Conference 2024, the company has also launched the long-awaited Preview version of Unreal Engine 5.4, keeping its promise made back in February.
According to the announcement, Unreal Engine 5's latest iteration brings significant enhancements to its overall performance, with a specific focus on refining rendering workflows.
The UE5.4 release aims to bolster the capabilities of its Nanite tool through the introduction of an experimental Tessellation feature, allowing for detailed additions during rendering, and the integration of variable rate shading (VRS) via Nanite compute materials, leading to substantial performance boosts.
Furthermore, the engine's built-in animation toolset has received substantial updates, including a new Modular Control Rig, Automatic Retargeting, reorganized Anim Details, an overhauled Sequencer, and more.
Other notable features introduced in UE5.4 include Motion Matching, an expandable framework for next-gen animation capabilities, and Multi-Process Cook, which reduces the time needed to obtain a cooked output.
