Valve Reportedly Generated Nearly $300M from 2022 Dota 2 Battle Pass

Valve reportedly generated nearly $300 million from the Dota 2 Battle Pass between September 1 and January 12, 2022.

Last year, Valve changed the Dota 2 Battle Pass system splitting it into two parts and extending the content release over five months. The move apparently helped the company achieve impressive results as, according to statistical websites Team Secret and STRATZ, it resulted in significant revenue of $293,024,922 generated from the battle pass in 2022.

Most of the revenues came from China – players in this country spent over $26 million on Battle Pass. Russian players also contributed to a substantial part of Battle Pass's revenues spending nearly $25 million on it. The third largest country in terms of spending was the US with more than $11 million spent on Battle Pass. The top five countries also include Japan with $6 million and Ukraine with $5.7 million.

Although Valve's decision to change the Dota 2 Battle Pass system has generated significant revenue, it has also faced criticism from the community regarding the allocation of prizes in competitive scenes.

Valve typically contributes 25% of all Battle Pass-related purchases to the prize pool of The International. However, the allocation of prize money this year only applied to Part I of the Battle Pass, which ran from September 1 to November 2, with all profits from the Battle Pass Part II going directly to Valve.
