Warlock Looks Like a New Kind of AAA D&D Themed Open World RPG
At gamescom, Invoke Studios revealed Warlock’s fluid melee combat, versatile D&D spells, systemic world interactions, environmental puzzles, character progression, and open-world exploration in Darkon.
Invoke Studios has revealed the first extended gameplay from Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, demonstrating how the upcoming single-player action-adventure combines fast melee combat and powerful magic with a highly systemic interpretation of D&D magic.
Warlock is not simply attaching recognizable D&D spell names to a conventional combat system, however. Invoke is building its entire open world around the idea that magic should function as a versatile collection of tools. The same ability might immobilize an enemy, steal its weapon, create a platform, expose a hidden path, or alter the environment in a way that produces an entirely different solution.

Set in the Domain of Dread known as Darkon, the game follows Kaatri, a seasoned weapons master searching for someone she has lost. That journey leads her to Tasha, an ancient witch queen who offers Kaatri a dangerous shortcut to power by becoming her patron.
In one snippet of combat, the game's protagonist, Kaatri, shoots electrical powers onto wet enemies to amplify the damage. It stands to reason that environmental factors, elements, and creativity will be rewarded here.
Kaatri is performed by Tricia Helfer, known for Battlestar Galactica, Lucifer, Mass Effect, and StarCraft II. Tasha is played by Maggie Robertson, who previously portrayed Lady Dimitrescu in Resident Evil Village and Orin the Red in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Unlike a wizard who spends years learning to manipulate the arcane, a warlock receives power through a pact with a supernatural entity. Kaatri’s agreement with Tasha gives her the ability to sense Raw Magic hidden throughout Darkon, which can be collected to expand and transform her magical capabilities.
The relationship also creates an intriguing narrative foundation. Kaatri needs Tasha’s power to continue her search, but accepting that power places her fate—and potentially her soul—in the hands of one of D&D’s most powerful and unpredictable figures.
The gameplay reveal demonstrated several recognizable D&D abilities, including Eldritch Blast, Levitate, Gust of Wind, Black Tentacles, Misty Step, and Witch Bolt. Other powers have been created or substantially reimagined for the game, including Tasha’s Leash, which produces spectral tendrils capable of grabbing enemies, weapons, and objects.
The result looks less like a collection of attacks assigned to a conventional ability wheel and more like a magical toolbox. According to Invoke, the game’s systems are designed to respond consistently enough that players can experiment and discover solutions the developers may not have explicitly planned.

The combat shown during the demonstration looked exceptionally fast and fluid. Kaatri launched enemies into the air, repositioned them with magic, summoned weapons, and followed with close-range combinations. Spells appeared to flow directly into melee attacks without forcing the action to pause or making the two sides of her skill set feel disconnected.
Character progression should provide substantial room to change how those tools function. In addition to acquiring new spells, players can find gear, weapons, talismans, potions, and Raw Magic throughout Darkon. Invoke says Raw Magic will allow Kaatri to expand and transform her abilities, although the full structure of its upgrades and character builds has not yet been detailed.
Magic also plays a major role outside combat. The game’s dungeons feature environmental puzzles and traversal challenges that require players to examine how their current abilities interact with the surrounding architecture. A spell learned for battle may become the key to reaching a hidden area or navigating an apparently impassable ruin.

Warlock is not attempting to follow Baldur’s Gate 3 by reproducing tabletop rules, dice rolls, party composition, or branching character creation. It instead takes the fantasy of one D&D class and expands it into an entire action game, with a defined protagonist and a more focused personal story.
Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons will be released in 2027 for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
