Wrath of Onryō, indie developer roughE's latest title inspired by the Devil May Cry series, takes you to the Sengoku period in Japan.
Reddit user Rafi260 has showcased a clip of execution animation from their upcoming project made with Unreal Engine 5. Not only does its slash move look sick, but also the effect of the dead enemy’s body turning into flames before dying out looks gorgeous.
It comes from Wrath of Onryō, an action game that has been inspired by the Devil May Cry series, with brutal hack and slash set in the dark, gothic Sengoku period that’s three hundred years prior to our time. The protagonist, Yuri, is a female character who is wearing traditional Japanese clothes and holding a katana sword. As her parents are brutally murdered by the demon Zarok, she embarks on a journey to destroy Zarok’s force and reclaim her family’s honor.
Here are the key features of the game:
- Master Devastating Combat: Unleash devastating combos with a mix of bare-handed martial arts and deadly melee weapons.
- Face Your Twisted Foes: Face an array of terrifying enemies, each once human but twisted into monstrous forms by Zarok’s dark magic.
- Explore Haunting Worlds: Journey across three desolate and hauntingly beautiful islands, each ravaged by Zarok’s demonic influence.
- A Story of Vengeance and Betrayal
Besides the execution animation, the developer also shared more footage to give us further looks at the melee combat, enemies, early prototype, the ability to multiply yourself, and more:
This funny development progress footage shows what started as a fruit ninja-like game where your enemies were kiwis and pineapples has evolved into a cool action-adventure game with high-octane combats and stunning visual effects:
The immersive Japanese-style environment powered by UE 5 is another attractive aspect of the game. Ancient pagodas and wooden gates surrounded by rich plants transport you to the mysterious historical period in the Asian country.
