Xbox Prices Are Increasing by $100 & More
Memory shortage is affecting electronics with frightening power.

Xbox consoles will become more expensive starting August 1. Microsoft announced its decision to increase the prices by $100 for 512 GB models and $150 for 1 TB models. It will also be "sunsetting" its 2 TB models.
Now, the Xbox Series S will start at $499.99, the Xbox Series X without a disc drive will start at $749.99, and with a disc drive – at $799.99.
Just in October, the prices jumped by $20-$70 in the US, but that was not enough to combat rising storage and memory expenses, affected by the shortages that were created by companies chasing AI.
"We hoped another price increase would not be necessary, and we have spent the last several months working with suppliers on options. Unfortunately, console storage and memory prices have increased by more than 2.5x and we expect another doubling by the fall of 2027. The entire consumer electronics industry is struggling with the current components crisis, but the effects are particularly hard on consoles. Unlike phones, computers, speakers, and other consumer devices, consoles are typically not sold at a profit, but instead for less than they cost to make," Xbox said.
To make its consoles more accessible, Xbox introduced several programs:
- Buy Now, Pay Later: Xbox made it easier for players to use Buy Now, Pay Later options on eligible hardware purchases through Microsoft Stores, making it possible to break up your payment into short-term, interest-free installments.
- Interest-Free Financing: Xbox is working with partners to let players purchase consoles at 0% APR financing for up to 12 months, giving players more flexibility with lower monthly payments and more budgeting control.
- Previously Played Consoles: The company is working with retail partners on new programs to provide previously played consoles at lower prices. Players who are ready to upgrade or no longer use their console will be able to trade it in with participating retail partners for cash or store credit. Those consoles will then be made available at lower prices for players.
- Certified Refurbished Consoles: Xbox Certified Refurbished Consoles are available at Microsoft Stores for up to $100 off MSRP.
This is nice but will likely not appease players, even when Microsoft says that Xbox Series S is "the lowest-cost way for console players to enjoy the biggest hits this year, including Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Gears of War: E-Day, Grand Theft Auto VI, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Madden NFL 27."
Just a reminder: Microsoft launched the Xbox Series S at $299 and the Series X at $499 in 2020.
