Zelda Producer Explains What Led to Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Remake

Eiji Aonuma says that the remake is linked to the series' 40th anniversary and may give the team new insights for future Zelda games.

Nintendo has explained what led it to revisit The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with another remake.

In the first part of the Ask the Developer Q&A series, the creators were asked what prompted the team to remake the game for Nintendo Switch 2. Franchise Producer Eiji Aonuma said this year marks the 40th anniversary of the first Legend of Zelda game, and he was thinking about what to create as the series' producer. According to Aonuma, many team members who work on Zelda games today have only developed recent titles. This made him wonder: "Do they truly understand just how significant The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was to the series as a whole?"

He added that learning the structure and development style of the original and rebuilding it as a full remake "may trigger new insights that they can carry forward into future development." That led the team to decide that now is the right time to revisit the game.

"Many of the team members who work alongside me on Legend of Zelda games today have only experienced developing the more recent titles. That led me to wonder, "Do they truly understand just how significant The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was to the series as a whole?" Of course, there are team members who vaguely know the game, and those who played it in their childhood days. But I started to wonder how they'd interpret The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time as they go about developing future Legend of Zelda games."

The Q&A also reveals that Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development (EPD) Production Group No. 3 is leading the development of the game, as spotted by IGN. The Q&A features franchise producer Eiji Aonuma and series director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. HokWai Ng, Aya Shida, Hiroki Taguchi, and Masato Ohashi from Production Group No. 3 are also named as interviewees. Thus, the core team is the same group that has worked on most Zelda projects over the past 30 years.
