The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Switch 2 Remake Releases This Year
That's right, the leaks and rumors were accurate (once again), and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake for Switch 2 is not only real, but it's releasing this year for the franchise's ongoing 40th anniversary.
In case you missed it
The rumors were true
After months of rumors and years of leaks, Nintendo has officially announced a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, bringing one of gaming's most influential and beloved adventures to Switch 2 in later this year.
Nintendo has officially unveiled a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, confirming one of the industry's longest-running rumors and bringing one of the most celebrated games ever made to the Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement arrived during today's Nintendo Direct presentation, where the company offered fans their first glimpse of the reimagined classic.
While Nintendo kept details close to the chest, the reveal trailer confirmed that this is far more than another remaster or enhanced port. Early footage showcased a completely rebuilt visual presentation, with a new art direction that many fans have already compared to a blend of modern Zelda aesthetics and the darker fantasy tone of titles like Twilight Princess or even the Wii U Zelda tech demo from E3.
The trailer revisited the game's iconic opening moments, showing young Link in Kokiri Forest before culminating in a logo reveal. There's a new voiceover at the start as well, with notes of Saria's Song playing in the background. It seems like they're going to lean harder into the "boy without a fairy" storybook vibe, at least for the portions of the game featuring young Link. Perhaps the adult sections will take on an even darker tone.
Originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, Ocarina of Time helped define 3D action-adventure design and introduced systems such as lock-on Z-targeting that would influence game development for decades. Imagine playing a melee combat game like Dark Souls without lock-on targeting!
It was remastered for the 3DS in 2011 with new visuals, but largely identical content, and the N64 version has been ported to the GameCube, Wii Virtual Console, and Nintendo Switch Online service. The game remains one of the highest-rated games ever released and is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. Personally, it's my favorite game ever, but I'm certainly biased by the nostalgia.
We've seen many glimpses of what a remade Ocarina of Time could look like over the years, such as this version in Unreal Engine 5 from 2023 or this even earlier example from 2022.
For now, Nintendo has confirmed that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Remake will launch for Switch 2 in 2026. Additional details, including gameplay footage and a release date, are expected in the coming months.
