A Breakdown of VFX in Returnal

Take a look at the development process behind visual effects in Returnal.

The Video Game Company Housemarque has released a brand-new deep dive into VFX in their PS5 game Returnal. The breakdown sheds some light on the game's programmable particle system and how it was used to create some of the game's VFX features. This includes some of the vegetation, character effects, and Volumetric Fog, driven by fluid simulations.

For those unaware, Returnal is a third-person sci-fi shooter for PS5, developed by Housemarque and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The game runs on Unreal Engine but uses a lot of custom tech, one of which, the particle system, was discussed in the video above.
