A Closer Look At Anime-Style Eyes With Realistic Highlights In Blender

Check out kakeu_don's Emma Verde rig.

At 80 Level, we love featuring eye setups because artists get incredibly creative, often sharing brilliant rigs and clever techniques for achieving physics and perspective effects in 3D. 3D Artist known as kakeu_don recently shared their work-in-progress on a 3D version of Emma Verde from Love Live!, a popular Japanese franchise about high school girl idol groups, offering a close look at the eyes rig.

As the artist noted, the highlight's structure is shaped like a hemisphere to mimic the natural bulge of a crystal lens. The rig is designed to orbit around this shape, so by simply rotating it, the highlight shifts naturally, creating a convincingly three-dimensional effect.

If you're interested in creative takes on stylized eyes, check out Orode'Studio's work, Mr. Zingy's tutorial on faking a 3D look from the side view, Ravenn's fluid and expressive close-ups, Fabrizio Espindola's Godot shader, Kensyouen_Y's parallax shader, Meovvsotis' Sakura Kinomoto portrait, and many more impressive projects featured on our website:
