A New Guide Explains How to Make a Reusable Eye Rig With Houdini APEX

Max Rose published a new two-part tutorial on eye rigging and shared the rig for free on Gumroad.

Visual Effects Artist and 3D Animator Max Rose continues to explain how to utilize SideFX's flagship procedural 3D software, Houdini, for rigging with a brand-new two-part tutorial on setting up a reusable eye rig using APEX.

For those unaware, APEX (All-Purpose EXecution) is Houdini's new graph evaluation framework introduced with Houdini 20 that can build and run graphs and fetch their results. Within the KineFX rigging framework, APEX graphs are used to represent the rig logic. APEX graphs can also be built up to perform more complex functionality like determining how an entire character behaves, complete with an FK hierarchy for the skeleton, and logic to deform geometry.

In his new guide, Max showed the novel framework in action, discussing the entire process of creating an eye rig from start to finish. Moreover, the author has also shared the rig itself, which you can download for free on Gumroad. You can check the two-part tutorial attached above and below or by visiting Max's YouTube channel.

And here are some of the author's previous guides on Houdini APEX:
