A Realistic 3D Recreation of The Seventh Seal's Death

Alexander Blom paid tribute to the legendary Swedish film using Maya, ZBrush, and Substance 3D Painter.

Alexander Blom, a Character Artist at MachineGames, has paid tribute to Ingmar Bergman's legendary 1957 Swedish film The Seventh Seal with a stunning 3D take on the movie's interpretation of Death, originally portrayed by Bengt Ekerot.

With this project, Blom aimed to practice creating a likeness from an older film with a very distinct and iconic art direction and cinematography, while achieving the most realistic result he could and staying true to the real-life actor. To capture the character and the film's macabre and eerie atmosphere, the author used Maya, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter, XGen, and Marmoset Toolbag.

For comparison, here's the original scene the artwork was inspired by:

Earlier, Alexander also showcased a number of assets he produced for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, you can check them out, along with the artist's earlier works, by visiting Alexander's ArtStation page.
