Art Style of Retro Anime From the 1990s Nailed in Blender

Jonathan Thielens experimented with 90s anime-style rendering in Blender.

Take a look at this marvelous 1990s retro anime-style tape recorder animation created by Junior 3D Artist and Design Lead Jonathan Thielens, also known as 24 masks, to experiment with rendering 2D-like sequences in Blender.

As stated by the creator, both the recorder and the hand were modeled in Blender, while most of the "heavy-duty post-processing" occurred in After Effects, where the author deliberately reduced the picture quality to emulate the hand-drawn cel animation style of the 80s and 90s.

Jonathan further emphasized that the project is based on the techniques shown by veryveig and Ben Marriott in their tutorials on creating 90s anime in Blender and achieving the retro looks in AE:

And here are some of Jonathan's earlier works, you can see more by visiting the artist's ArtStation page:

If you would like to check out more 2D-looking 3D renders inspired by old-school anime, we also recommend checking out the works of Tunnel Rat, Hirokazu Yokohara, and オギノ:
