Character Generator Demo Made with Wrap3

High-quality 3D faces could be easier to make with more data.

3D Scan Store, a digital library of 3D-scanned character assets, shared a glimpse of a could-be character generator made with Wrap3, a topology transfer tool that helps create digital characters based on 3D scans.

Wrap makes it possible to take an existing basemesh and non-rigidly fit it to every scan. It provides a set of scan processing tools like decimation, mesh filtering, texture projection and many more. Thanks to node-graph architecture once you’ve processed a scan, you can apply the same recipe to an unlimited number of other scans.

Wrap lets you convert 3D scans of facial expressions into a consistent topology and is suitable for converting full-body scans into a common topology for further rigging, animation, and cloth simulation.

The demo shows how easy it would be to make high-quality faces if the generator was completed. Unfortunately, it needs much more data than 3D Scan Store has to create diverse heads.

"It would need to be around 500 X the size minimum for a properly trained AI also with a huge range of diversity. It’s much easier just to do it with a morphable controllable system like this. But still needs a huge amount of data to do it properly," said the creator.

As the artist known as cloverme mentioned, this would look great in Reallusion's Character Creator or Unity.
