Check Out This Immersive and Beautiful Tribute to the Movie Coco
The ofrenda looks very detailed.
Iana Stamo, 3D Generalist and Cinematic Artist, shared on her ArtStation an animated showcase that pays tribute to Disney Pixar's movie Coco.
The artist explained that the project demonstrates the scene in dynamic motion, focusing on character animation, custom rigging, complex procedural FX, and shifting atmospheric lighting.
She made the animation from scratch, intending to show a complete character production with cinematic environment art, covering custom rigging, hand-keyed character animation, and advanced procedural simulation.
Stamo wanted to convey the vibrant, emotional, and colorful world of Santa Cecilia and the Land of the Dead into a highly detailed and atmospheric scene. She focused on initial world-building, concept interpretation, 3D modeling, organic sculpting, texturing, set dressing, color composition, and cinematic lighting.
She explained that every single asset was individually designed, modeled, and textured to keep artistic cohesion. Stamo said that she designed the traditional ofrenda very meticulously, adding custom-sculpted skulls, candles, cempasúchil flowers, and family portraits.
As a Mexican myself, I think the altar truly shows the respect, devotion, and love we put into them. Take a look at some of the props:
She also made the Xoloitzcuintle dog with flowers. And to add a fun fact, it is said that this breed of dog was made by the god Xólotl to guide souls across the Mictlán.
Stamo explained that she used lighting and color to add more ambience to the scene, adding split lighting, contrasting the warm candlelit with the vibrant portal to the spirit world.
