Check Out This Paper-Theater Style Cinematic Mooncolony Made for Clash Royale

The art outsourcing studio Mooncolony collaborated with Supercell to produce a stylized 2.5D cinematic exploring the origin story of the Witch Evolution card in Clash Royale.

UK-based art production studio Mooncolony has revealed details behind its latest collaboration with Supercell in the form of a 2.5D animated cinematic titled The Undead March, created to promote Clash Royale’s Witch Evolution card and seasonal ranked challenge.

The short film has already surpassed 7.8 million views on YouTube as of the time of this writing and received a nomination at the Society for Games Cinematics Awards, highlighting the continued creative partnership between the two teams.

“There was an intense visual development process to come up with a unique style. We were involved from the very start, shaping early style decisions all the way through to the final art and animation. We designed illustrations to act as props for the animation team, which helped create a distinctive visual language for the cinematic.”

- Alexandre Leoni, Lead Artist

Unlike many Clash Royale promotional videos known for their fast-paced humor and exaggerated action, the brief for The Undead March called for something more emotional and character-driven. The cinematic explores the origin story of one of the game’s most recognizable characters, the Witch, presenting a darker tone while still remaining visually aligned with the franchise’s distinctive style.

To achieve that balance, Mooncolony developed a paper-puppet theatre aesthetic for the piece. The final look relies on layered silhouettes, paper folds, and vertical cutouts to create depth and movement, while carefully placed lighting helps establish atmosphere and guide the emotional tone of the story. The handcrafted style allows the cinematic to feel like a storybook unfolding while still fitting naturally within the Clash Royale universe.

Mooncolony handled the entire production pipeline in-house, including concept development, storyboarding, illustration, animation, 2D visual effects, and final polish.

The project reflects Mooncolony’s broader focus on style-consistent visual storytelling, particularly for live-service games where cinematic content must align closely with established art direction. The studio frequently collaborates with major developers across concept art, character design, key art, and 2.5D animation, with past partnerships including companies such as Blizzard Entertainment, Epic Games, Riot Games, Ubisoft, and Netflix.
